Outdoor Sculpture Competition 2012-13

The cities of Bristol, TN/VA, are accepting submissions from sculptors for our annual Outdoor Sculpture Competition. Up to ten works will be selected for a one-year exhibition in downtown Bristol, TN/VA. A $1200 stipend will be awarded to each of the artists chosen. Hotel accommodations will also be provided during installation.

Entry Guidelines:
Artists must be 18 years of age or older.

Work must be
• Original
• Three-dimensional
• Suitable for outdoor installation and able to be structurally
secured to a concrete pad
• Capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions and
high traffic areas and safe for children
• Suitable for family viewing

Works deemed unsafe, overly fragile, or otherwise unsuitable will not be considered for the exhibition.

Size Limitations: No work can exceed 15 feet in height or weigh more than 500 pounds, due to the limitations of the equipment available to Art in Public Places for installation of the sculptures. If you would like to enter a larger piece and are able to provide your own equipment for installation, please contact us for authorization prior to submission.

Entry Instructions:

A non-refundable fee of $25 enables artists to submit up to three entries. Make check or money order payable to Art in Public Places.

Each artist must submit a maximum of three high resolution digital photographs detailing alternate views for each entry. Images must be in jpeg format. Artists must submit the title, size, materials used, and listed insurance price of each piece entered, as well as an explanatory statement (approximately 100 words) about each sculpture submitted. Each artist must also submit a high resolution photograph of him- or herself, a short biography (100 words or less), and his or her website URL (if applicable).

Additional Information:

Sculptures will be insured by the cities of Bristol, TN/VA, for the duration of the exhibit. The cities of Bristol, TN/VA, will provide limited heavy equipment and personnel to facilitate installation on site. Sales of sculptures are actively encouraged. A 20% commission will go to Art in Public Places on all works sold as a result of the exhibit. All sculptures must remain on site during the period of display. Artists will be notified no later than June 15th, 2012, if their work has been selected.

Artist responsibilities (if work is chosen):
• Artist must be present during installation of sculpture and at the
reception.
• Artist must also allow use of his or her likeness and biographical
information for publicity purposes by Art in Public Places.
• Transportation arrangements are the responsibility of the artist.

2012-13 Juror: Ben Hernandez

Artist, curator, writer, filmmaker, and producer Benjamin Hernandez has been working for 15 years organizing multi-media events, art shows, and performances at countless venues, art galleries, museums, public festivals, and uncommon spaces in his native city of Detroit, MI. He has curated an ambitious series of public programs, education workshops at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) since the museum’s inception in 2006. Hernandez has acted as co-curator of several MOCAD exhibitions, including considering Detroit, Radio Caroline (as part of the traveling Broadcast exhibition), and the internationally renowned Shrinking Cities exhibition.

Prior to his involvement as Curator of Public Programs at MOCAD, Hernandez acted as Director and Primary Curator for the cutting edge gallery and performance gallery Detroit Art Space, curating hundreds of solo and group exhibitions and performances.

Most recently, Hernandez acted as a juror for the 2009 Kresge Fellowship competition, selecting 9 artists from Southeastern Michigan to represent the region as $25,000 Awarded Fellows. As an artist, his work has been exhibited internationally in numerous museums, institutes, galleries, and traveling exhibitions. Benjamin Hernanadez’s primary interest lies at the point where art intersects everyday life and the exploration of art’s inherent ability to create a sense of community.
