Outdoor Sculpture Competition 2008
The cities of Bristol, TN/VA, are accepting submissions from sculptors for our third Outdoor Sculpture Competition. Up to ten works will be selected for a one-year exhibition in downtown Bristol, TN/VA. A $1000 stipend will be awarded to each of the artists chosen.Entry Guidelines
Artists must be 18 years of age or older and residing in the USA.
Work must be:
• Original and executed within the past three years.
• Three-dimensional.
• Suitable for outdoor installation and able to be structurally secured to a concrete pad.
• Capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions and high traffic areas, and safe for children.
• Suitable for family viewing.
Works deemed unsafe, overly fragile, or otherwise unsuitable will not be considered for the exhibition.
Size Limitations: No work can exceed 15 feet in height or weigh more than 500 pounds.
Entry Instructions
A non-refundable fee of $15 enables artists to submit up to three entries. Make check or money order payable to Arts Alliance Mountain Empire with a notation that it is for the Art in Public Places Sculpture Competition.
Each artist must submit a maximum of three slides detailing alternate views for each entry. Digital images in jpeg format can be emailed to submissions@aippbristol.org. High resolution images are preferred. Standard 35mm slides mounted on plastic or cardboard also will be accepted. No glass slides, please. Maquettes or slides of models will not be considered. Each image or slide should include the artist's name and address, and the title of the work. Artists must submit listed insurance price of each piece entered. Slides, entry form, and self-addressed stamped envelope should be sent with check or money order to:

Additional Information
Sculptures will be insured by the cities of Bristol, TN/VA, for the duration of the exhibit. The cities of Bristol, TN/VA, will provide heavy equipment and personnel to facilitate installation on site where needed. Sales of sculptures are actively encouraged. A 20% commission will go to Arts Alliance Mountain Empire on all works sold as a result of the exhibit. All sculptures must remain on site during the one-year period of display. Artist will be notified no later than June 10th, 2008 if their work has been selected.
Artist responsibilities (if work is chosen):
• Artist must be present during installation of sculpture and during the Reception and Walking Tour.
• Artist must supply a bio, head shot, and information about his or her chosen sculptures.
• Artist must also allow use of his or her likeness and biographical information for publicity purposes by the Arts Alliance Mountain Empire.
• Transportation arrangements are primarily the responsibility of the artist.
2008 Juror: Paul Ha
Paul Ha is the Director of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (the Contemporary). Under his leadership, the Contemporary has become a vibrant center for contemporary art and a prominent national venue. Exhibitions conceived during Ha's tenure include I Remember Heaven: Jim Hodges and Andy Warhol; Laylah Ali: Painting and Drawings; Alexander Ross: Survey, Michael Lin; Yun-Fei Ji: The Empty City; William Pope.L, eRacism: electronica; Cindy Sherman: Working Girl; Polly Apfelbaum: Crazy Love and Love Crazy; and Slater Bradley: Contemporary Project Series. Prior to the Contemporary, Ha was the Deputy Director of Programs and External Affairs at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut. Before that Ha was the Executive Director (1996-2001) and Associate Director (1993-1996) of White Columns, New York's oldest not-for-profit visual art space where he curated more than 50 solo and group exhibitions and where he exhibited artists such as Sarah Sze, Anna Gaskell, Christoph Büchel, Aïda Ruilova, and Jessica Craig-Martin early in their careers, often presenting the artist's first solo exhibition. Ha began his career in
the arts over twenty years ago at the Washington Project for the Arts in Washington, DC.
Ha has lectured extensively on contemporary art, artists, the emerging art scene, and the importance of not-for profits. He has served extensively on panels; as a juror for numerous grant-giving organizations; and has been a visiting critic and lecturer for many institutions, universities and art schools. Some of these include the National Endowment for the Arts, the Federal Advisory Committee on International Exhibitions, Pew Fellowships in the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, the Visual Arts Jury for the American Academy in Rome's Rome Prize, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Yale University, Cranbrook Art Academy, and the Rhode Island School of Design. Ha served as a Visiting Lecturer at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, and the Museum Studies program at the University of Missouri where he taught courses on Curatorial Studies and History of Alternative Spaces.
